Stoneburn - Web Application Developer & Consultant (Python/Java/Google App Engine)

This is a permanent role, based in London, posted July 14, 2012.

About the job

Google App Engine :: Amazon Web Services :: Python :: Java :: Some front-end skill

Stoneburn are a premier Google Apps partner and Amazon Web Services Solution Provider. We specialise in cloud solutions, and work with customers from 100 to 100,000 staff. We’re not encumbered with legacy systems and we’re in a very exciting field, so it’s no surprise we are doubling in size every few months. We are actively looking to bring new talent into our engineering team as we continue to expand and win new projects.

We are looking for a self-starting individual to join our growing development division. Reporting to the Head of Consulting, you will be able to own projects from beginning to end, including consulting with customers and building solutions. Our primary platform is Google App Engine, which you will have experience using, but you may also target traditional platforms or other cloud environments. Example projects might be re-imagining a Lotus Notes application on Google App Engine, developing a custom login/authentication solution for Google Apps, or programming a web application to interact with the Google Search Appliance.

You will not be expected to be a graphic designer, but you will be expected to be able to take a toolkit such as GWT or Bootstrap and build an application yourself, both front and backend. As our team grows we will add specialists in these areas which, depending on your experience and interest, you may be asked to lead and mentor. If you’re as happy in a suit as you are in a IDE, this would be a great role for you.

Our ideal candidate will have a degree in Computer Science and several years experience as a programmer or developer using Python or Java. You should have experience writing against web APIs, the Google APIs a plus, and you should have demonstrable experience, either personal or corporate, on Google App Engine. Some experience with developing for infrastructure clouds such as Amazon EC2 is expected. People who can bring a history of writing applications which work at scale will go straight to the top of the pile.

Communication is a large part of this role. Please ensure you demonstrate your skills in a cover letter discussing how your experience relates to the position description. Applications without a cover letter may be rejected.

To summarize the job requirements:

  • Meet with a customer, along with our sales team, and understand their requirements
  • Provide technical content into sales proposals
  • Develop web applications running on a cloud environment or a customer's premises
  • Assist our Service Desk in keeping them running efficiently

In return, we offer you:

  • Competitive salary and bonus, based on your contribution to the company’s success
  • A fantastic Central London work environment with the support of a great team
  • Mentoring from UK’s leading experts
  • Experience with directly working with AWS and Google engineering
  • The chance to work with UK’s leading enterprise customers and high-street brands
  • Google and Amazon training in European locations
  • Technical certification for Google, Amazon, and other cloud technologies
  • Opportunity to accelerate your career with one of the UK’s leading cloud system integrators as it continues its fast expansion

Desired Skills & Experience

  • A Computer Science degree or equivalent demonstrated certification or experience
  • Senior level programming experience in Python or Java, and at least a passing familiarity with the other. (Bonus marks if you write in Go.)
  • Demonstrable experience with:
    • HTML, JavaScript and CSS
    • Non-relational (NoSQL) databases
    • A complex web API (preferably by Google)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Documentation must be second nature to you. This job will have regular customer-facing components.
  • Outstanding problem solving skills.
  • The motivation that when there’s nothing to do for a customer, you put yourself to work at finding other people in the business to help.
  • The ability to work within a small team but also the confidence to work alone.
  • The ability to take ownership of the management through to closure all on all issues related to our cloud services.
  • Experience with the Google Search Appliance or Google Apps is a plus.
